The Environmental Pollution Study Center was established in 1972 (renamed the Hitachi Environment Foundation in 2001) and it was aimed at advancing people’s recognition and understanding of environmental issues through surveys and research from wide-ranging viewpoints.
Major environmental problems at that time such as air pollution and industrial waste water were significantly reduced. However, other global environmental issues became obvious, i.e., global warming caused by the greenhouse effect, decreases in the number of tropical rainforests, desertification, destruction of ecosystems, loss of biodiversity, shortages of energy resources, water, and food caused by increased global population, treatment of wastes, and recycling of natural resources.
With the belief that basic knowledge and sufficient understanding of environmental issues are important to solve these global problems, the Hitachi Environment Foundation is promoting activities such as bestowing awards, publishing and funding research, and holding seminars.
The Hitachi Environment Foundation hopes to contribute to creating a recycling and sustainable society though our activities.
