While the Japanese people felt depressed after World War II, our founder, Chikara Kurata, realized the need for advances in science and technology in Japan so that original Japanese technologies could be created although those developed in the U.S.A. and Europe, which were predominant in Japan at that time.

"The advancement of fundamental research that is necessary for the creation of Japan’s own technology cannot be achieved by one private company. It can only be promoted by calling on expertise from all over Japan." With this belief, he endowed his retirement money to establish the foundation.

Note: Chikara Kurata was the 2nd president (1947-1961) of Hitachi, Ltd. when it was experiencing the most difficult time in its history. He rebuilt Hitachi with the founding principle of "contribution to Japanese industries and economies using Japanese-made technology". Moreover, he contributed to establishing the basis of technological competence in Japan.
