Visit Report: Vietnam

From August 24 to 28, 2026, The Hitachi Global Foundation visited three universities in Vietnam: Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ton Duc Thang University, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. During the visit, university representatives expressed their appreciation for the Foundation’s longstanding support. We exchanged views on continued research support through the award program and strengthened our connections with recipients of the Hitachi Global Foundation Asia Innovation Award and alumni of the Hitachi Scholarship Program.

During the visit, we had the opportunity to meet many award recipients and learn about their research activities since receiving the Award. The recipients continue to advance their work in their respective fields while taking on challenges to address various social issues.

University Visits

Visit to Hanoi University of Science and Technology

At Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Dr. Tan Minh Nguyen, recipient of the Best Innovation Award in FY2020, shared updates on ongoing research in food processing technologies aimed at achieving sustainable food systems. Dr. Minh Thuy Le, recipient of the Encouragement Award in FY2023, highlighted progress in research on energy harvesting and smart sensor technologies. Furthermore, Dr. Thang Minh Le, recipient of the Outstanding Innovation Award in FY2021, introduced research on catalytic and water treatment technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact. During the visit to the laboratories, we were able to learn more about the latest research activities.

Visit to Ton Duc Thang University

At Ton Duc Thang University, we met Dr. Viet Quoc Le, recipient of the Encouragement Award in FY2025. He shared the encouraging news that he had recently secured a new research grant following his Award recognition. He expressed his appreciation for how the Award has contributed to the further development of his research activities. We were delighted to hear how the Award has supported the further advancement of his research.
We also visited laboratories in the fields of automation and control engineering as well as civil engineering, where we learned about the university’s research initiatives and facilities.

Visit to Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Dr. Thanh Xuan Bui, recipient of the Outstanding Innovation Award in FY2022, introduced his research on sustainable wastewater treatment technologies. We also met Dr. Trang Hoang, recipient of the Outstanding Innovation Award in FY2025, who shared insights into research on semiconductor design using artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Both projects address important societal challenges in environmental sustainability and advanced technologies, and it was inspiring to see how their work has continued to progress since receiving the Award.

Hitachi Scholarship Alumni Gathering

At both Hanoi University of Science and Technology and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, we also held networking gatherings with alumni of the Hitachi Scholarship Program. The alumni are actively contributing to academia, industry, and other professional fields. During the gatherings, participants shared memories of their scholarship experiences, discussed their current research and professional activities, and renewed friendships in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
We also spoke with Dr. Minh Thuy Le of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, who is both a graduate of the Hitachi Scholarship Program and the recipient of the FY2023 Encouragement Award. She shared that the Hitachi Scholarship Program provided her with opportunities to build lasting connections with researchers in Japan, which continue to generate collaborative research projects today. We were greatly encouraged to see that the relationships fostered through the Scholarship Program have continued to grow and develop into new research activities.

Through this visit, we were delighted to see the award recipients and scholarship alumni making significant contributions in their respective fields.
